Empowering Latin Women: De Mujer a Mujer NZ, Creativo NZ and Mount TV Join Forces

Updated: Apr 8

Mount TV recently had the privilege of working alongside De Mujer a Mujer NZ and Creativo to bring an important social issue to light: the way Latin women are approached in clubs. In an exclusive interview, we spoke with Sofía Villegas, the driving force behind De Mujer a Mujer NZ, to discuss the impact of their work, the importance of storytelling, and how professional filmmaking played a crucial role in delivering their message.

A Voice for Latin Women

De Mujer a Mujer NZ began as a radio podcast and evolved into a powerful initiative advocating for Spanish-speaking women in New Zealand. Sofía explained that the project was inspired by the legacy of influential women throughout history, with a mission to raise awareness about systemic issues that perpetuate inequality and gender-based violence.

"We focus on empowerment, self-awareness, and emancipation while addressing the realities that many Latin women face," she shared. "Our goal is to create a safe space for conversations and change."

Addressing a Critical Issue Through Film

The latest project, filmed with support from Mount TV and Creativo, was born out of real-life testimonies shared in Latin sorority groups online. Sofía recounted how a single post about a woman experiencing harassment in a club unleashed a flood of similar stories, highlighting a widespread problem.

"Thanks to Shama, a Hamilton-based trust working against violence towards women, we saw an opportunity to amplify this issue," she said. "Mount TV helped us bring these stories to the screen with the quality and depth they deserve."

Challenging Stereotypes and Changing Perceptions

One of the strongest messages from the film is dismantling harmful stereotypes. "Many assume that because Latin women embrace their femininity, they invite certain behaviors. This film challenges that perception," Sofía emphasized.

The emotional impact of the project was undeniable. "Our main actress broke down in tears while rehearsing, as the script reflected her own experience. It was a powerful reminder of why De Mujer a Mujer exists – to listen, support, and inspire change."

The Power of Storytelling

As a journalist and communications expert, Sofía understands the influence of visual storytelling. "Video connects people through shared emotional experiences. It places viewers in someone else’s shoes, forcing them to reflect on issues they may not have noticed before," she explained.

Mount TV played a key role in ensuring the message was visually compelling. "The collaboration with Mount TV and Creativo was fantastic. They didn't just film; they became part of the cause. The professionalism and high-quality production elevated our project, making sure it reached as many people as possible."

Creating Safer Spaces for Latin Women

Beyond this project, De Mujer a Mujer NZ continues its advocacy through workshops and community initiatives. "Raising awareness is crucial. If we witness injustice and do nothing, we become part of the problem. That's why we offer workshops, equipping Latin party organizers and DJs with tools to prevent harm."

How to Get Involved

For those interested in supporting De Mujer a Mujer NZ, their next workshop, ‘Safe Night: Preventing Sexual Harm in Our Latin Community,’ will take place on April 5th.

Follow their social media accounts (@DeMujerAmujerNZ) or visit their website (DemujeramujerNZ) for updates and details on how to participate.

This collaboration between De Mujer a Mujer NZ, Mount TV, and Creativo is a testament to the power of storytelling in creating real change. At Mount TV, we believe in using audiovisual media to amplify voices that need to be heard, and we are proud to stand alongside organizations working toward a safer, more respectful world for all women.
